I agree...cool article. I know part of Poulter's success is mind games as well. It just is a different mindset than the usual stroke play events.

www.pgatour.com/tour-insider/2015/04/28/match-play-mentality.htmlI posted an interesting article that talks about Jason Day and his refusal in match play events to concede fairly easy putts. When it comes to conceding putts I completely agree with Jason Day. I don't think a putt outside of 6 inches should ever be conceded in a match play event. I think Day actually used the strategy of not conceding putts to get under the skin of his opponent a bit. Why? is my question. No one should ever just allow an opponent a freebie. Do defenses in the NFL allow an opponent a free entry from the one foot line. I don't think so. As a matter of fact the last superbowl was decided by a play that was made by the defense from the one yard line. Golf is about the short game and especially putting. putts of 1 to 3 feet can very easily be missed even for a pro golfer. I think the phenomenon of conceding putts in match play is alot like a player bunting for a base hit in baseball to break up a no hitter. This is competition and in competition all competitors should play to win at all times. How did golf ever get to the point of considering a player ungentlemenly if he/she refuses to concede short putts. Interesting link/topic. Disagree with Day. I think the smarter match-play strategy, is to concede short putts early in the round... but not concede (similar length putts) later in the round, if/when situation applies.

For the record if I was playing my brother in match play I wouldn't concede any length putt. LOL The McNulty curse is putting. We will leave putts short......like not even half way there short.........or have a 1 footer and get a sudden burst of adrenaline right at impact and it goes flying 5 feet by. LOL My older brother is notorious for it. My younger brother and I are much better golfers than he is. Man can we get in his head though. LOLOL It is absolutely hysterical. There is not much funnier than watching a 12 foot putt go 4 feet or a 2 foot putt go 8 feet past the hole in a pressure situation.

I don't have time to go through all the names but will name a few guys who I think could surprise and do well. I say this knowing in match play anything can happen and this sis the most unpredictable format of an unpredictable game. Marc Leishman: He played well last week coming back from a very tough time in his life. I think he is focused and motivated. Rickie Fowler: He plays better in big events and actually hit the ball as good as anyone last week. His putter was beyond horrendous and at some point that has to bounce back and in this format he can be aggressive. Russell Henley: Very streaky putter and showing signs of life. If putter gets hot he is deadly in a format like this Favorites I like: Spieth and Rory are obvious guys to like this week. Of the other fav I like Patrick Reed. Bull dog and the big number from bad drives hurts him less.

So far the interesting results
Hoffman over Day - is it curtains for the defending champ Senden over Stenson - another favorite goes down hard in extra holes B Martin over Kuchar - not a huge surprise but still a surprise as I wanted to pick Martin in an upset in this group Mahan over Gallacher - 7 & 6, what a route from a player not playing well coming in Leishman over Rose - If Josh and Ryan thought they would dominate this week that is not the way things have started out Woodland over Walker - I don't know if Rich wanted it to play out this way Simpson over Poulter - playing well going in seems of little relevance so far this year Oosthuizen over Bradley - 6 & 5, Wow Keegan you are becoming more worthless by the hour Warren over Holmes - upset for the lowest seed over the highest seed, I will sure take it Dubuisson down 4 vs Schwartzel - the nightmare continues for Josh

Woodland over Walker - I don't know if Rich wanted it to play out this way Would have been awesome....... in the finals. Not the first round. I'm not surprised Woodland won, tho. Can't believe I had 5 guys eligible, and 2 of them cannot advance, by virtue of the pool draw. (I think, I'm not sure I'm understanding this format, yet). Ever since the Valero, the golf gods have spit in my fantasy golf eyes. I love this west coast golf. It's 9:30 here as I'm typing, and still watching Kirk/Casey Na/Luiten. Some great golf!

Oosthuizen over Bradley - 6 & 5, Wow Keegan you are becoming more worthless by the hour Oostey's got mad game, when healthy. Absolutely gorgeous swing. But yer right, watching Bradley and Dufner struggle is weird. About a year ago, seemed poised to take a step-up.... but we're watching 2 steps back.

Day 1 Complete. The favorites won 18, the underdogs won 14. That is about the way it goes when it comes to match play. It's inevitable that there will be upsets but what is impossible to predict is which upsets will happen. There were some downright shocking first round results in some of the matches. It looks like there will be alot of group favorites that will not be moving on this year. Still two days of prelims but there are 16 golfers that are really under the gun now. I wonder how many of the first round losers will end up moving on. I will say maybe 2 of them will somehow recover. 4 of the top 5 players in the world did win today.

Oostey is perhaps the most under appreciated golfer there is...His best is as good as anyone's. Outside Hideki...today DID sick yak testicles for me today...especially since the last two years this tourney has been a nice ostrich plume in my hat. Still....tomorrow will decide much...and we will know who needs to do what on Friday. Just need Zachary Johnson to beat Hoffman tomorrow...think Day will take care of the rest.Need Haas to do the same to Senden tomorrow for Stenson. STENSON one sucked...He had Senden. Lahari was a nice surprise. Tomorrow is the big day for many...Some can even click moving on.

I am not down on Oosthuizen but Bradley was 3 over thru 13 holes if this was stroke play. He choked plain and simple. I am just about done with him on my team. He hasn't won in nearly 3 years. It's looking more and more like he was a one tourney wonder at the PGA Championship. He is almost never in the last or second to last group on a Sunday. Almost every other elite golfer (which Keegan is not) is in the last couple pairings at least some of the time on Sundays. Keegan is a very over rated golfer that is hardly ever even in position to win let alone actually win.
My team may be in second place now but with all the big events coming it won't last very long with players like Bradley stinking up the joint. I wouldn't be so tough on my golfers if I had actually won the league before but that has never happened.

These Oh fer Two's all need a kick in the ass. They are all either simply bad golfers or under achieved this week. Either way it's time to bid them fairwell.
Ryan Moore - didn't even come close to a win Brandt Snedeker - disappointing week no doubt Jason Dufner - really not a surprise with the recent play Alexander Levy - who cares Victor Dubuisson - even with his success last year the recent bad play did not bode well this week Adam Scott - very disappointing season so far Matt Every - not a huge surprise but he could have won at least once Mikko Illonen - as I pretty much predicted a worthless bum Jason Day - not just two losses but two big losses, one of the biggest disappointments of the last two days Brendon Todd - ho hum Stephen Gallacher - pretty much predicted Ryan Palmer - good player but didn't think he would make it to round of 16 Jimmy Walker - maybe he is just not a good match play player Ian Poulter - not even close to a win. Did he drink some poisonous water before the event started. Keegan Bradley - a collosal disappointment. Was not even competitive this week Miguel Jimenez - didn't really deserve to be here in the first place Graeme McDowell - Got beat by the lowly Harris English, chuckle chuckle Russell Henley - I am surprised by this one
Players that stand out as being very impressive so far
McIlroy - just taking care of business Horschel - he can start playing well at the drop of a hat Spieth - two confortable wins Hoffman - two big wins to start the event Mahan - might own the most impressive two day performance in the field Leishman - the giant killer, great start to the tourney Bubba - has been dominant so far Oosthuizen - very strong play
One thing that really hasn't been discussed much with this format is how the 0-2 players will compete on Friday knowing they are already done for the weekend. How many will mail it in. The politically correct answer would be to say they won't but I am not so sure I would agree with that. There will be at least SOME internal mailing it in IMO.

You can add Rickie to your list of guys very impressive. His 6 birdies in the first match were impressive and when he didn't play that well in match 2 he went Ian Poulter and drained about 100 feet of putts down the stretch to save holes to muster out a win.
I was disappointed in Zach Johnson today. He still can't make any putts to save his life. He is still alive, but needs help now.
