I think this event is big enough to deserve a thread for it a week early. The big headline so far is that Tiger Woods announced today that he is in the field. Love him or hate him that will create some extra buzz around Augusta National regardless of how he does. It will be an interesting story line no doubt. It never gets old hearing that Masters theme song when the coverage comes in and out of TV breaks.
Hopefully the flowers are in full bloom down there this year. A couple of years ago they weren't doing so well for the tourney. Hopefully the greens are super firm and fast so balls that aren't struck roll off the green and some into the water more easily. It's fun to watch golfers pay the price for bad shots. Always fun to watch Amen corner, especially hole #12 where it is always a big decision how safe to play the tee shot. On sunday do the players take the safe part of the green to the center or left or do they go for the flag risking themselves going into the pond if they come up short.
I always have to be reminded of 1996 when Greg Norman blew an insurmountable lead to Nick Faldo. I don't think I have ever been so devestated watching golf as I was that day. If there was ever a player totally cursed at Augusta is was definately Norman. I used to pretty much despise Faldo but after the way he handled himself humbled after winning that event I have gained respect for him ever since. How are you supposed to react after basically being handed the biggest tourney on the planet. I actually kind of like him these days. The very next year was the introduction of Tiger Woods to big time golf when he won going away in 1997 in what was a route from start to finish. Who could forget 1986 when Jack Nicklaus won at age 46. That was probably one of the most memorable back nines in the history of the tourney to see Jack do what he did, one last time at a major at an advanced age. "YES SIR" I will never forget that call.
