Just a little clarification... As noted, this is similar to groupings in World Cup soccer, however unlike soccer in group stage..There are no ties....AND.. no such thing as "stroke differential". Thus...losing a close match by one hole, then beating the cap out of of opponents the next two matches does not get you bonus points...A win or a loss-- by how much does not matter. SOooooo.... If a player loses his first match, while they are not eliminated, they don't control their own destiny and need things to fall just right. In group play...it will end one of FOUR WAYS: One team goes 3-0, one 2-1, one 1-2, one 0-3....OR.. . One goes 3-0, other three each go 1-2, OR, Two go 2-1, other two go 1-2, OR lastly...Three go 2-1, other goes 0-3.... those are the four ways a group can fall. First two scenarios are clear who goes through...so no need to discuss. If TWO teams tie at 2-1... The head to head winner moves on. THIS is why losing that first match digs such a deep hole...because even at head to head...A tie is not enough. That means that the guy you just lost to has to either lose BOTH his remain matches ( while you win both, of course)...or that if he loses just one...that a third player also is 2-1...which then even doesn't confirm you moving on...but at least you would be in a three way Sudden Death playoff. So...As you can see...lose your first match...you are hoping to just be in a Sudden Death Playoff...that is your BEST remaining situation. Thus, while there might be a tad bit of reassurance that a one loss right away doesn't mean elimination, you still are clinging on life support.

I can see why the players wanted a different format, from the previous one. But if not ONE first match loser doesn't advance, I think this format will suffer. IMO, these Tour Pros are just not gonna 'potentially waste' a week away from family by running into a hot-puttered opponent, for one day. (Single guys could prolly care less, lol). Now... one thing I'm not sure of.... does everyone in the field get a pay-check? That might make a difference. Don't get me wrong, I love match play. I just hope a few of the first round losers somehow advance. That would be great for the event/format, and validate the change; therefore keeping this novel week alive for future years. But if no first round losers advance, I would not blame any eligible player skipping this week in the future.

Wishing some of the first round losers to advance is just fine but in the old format those players would already be in their first class seat heading home for the week. At least they are mathmatically still alive in the tournament. I have no problem with this format nor did I have an issue with the old format either. The first round is of major importance no matter what the format is that is chosen. I just wish instead of a head to head tie breaker they would decide all tie breakers in a sudden death format. That would make for some interesting late Friday Night drama. That is the only problem I have with the new format. But really if two players are tied head to head is a very fair way to decide who advances.
