Today we have two tourneys going on...the result of the alphas, and others who qualified being able to play in an elite event ....and an alternate tournament for those who failed to qualify for the more prominent event. MY question here is ---if you are a player deemed "on the cusp", of stardom, or upper-tier status -- wouldn't you be playing in the lower tournament, as it would be a prime opportunity to perhaps get a first win (as you likely would be one of the favorites) --gain some FedEx points, and/or gain some ground, moving up in the OWGR (Golf Rankings)? For instance --- Brendon de Jonge is the highest-ranked player at this event ... (he has been in the 80's overall ranking-wise for the past few weeks). To ME...this makes perfect sense, where he is currently in the rankings ---he is a solid player, who now wants to be playing in all the best events, and is doing any means possible to get a chance to do such later on. Likewise --it is played on another Trump course...nice little vacation spot ---why wouldn't you play there, if you were NOT at Doral? THIS is my question ---ESPECIALLY if you are someone, say ranked in the 50's or 60's...just outside qualification of some of these events, where a win, or even a Top 5, likely bumps you up INSIDE qualification? Yes ---I AM picking on a certain Canadian who comes to mind ---but there are others, I am sure who SHOULD be there ...but DeLaet not being there ---no excuse for it, IMO. He is currently ranked 63rd in the world ...he missed out this week playing Doral...the WGC-Match Play is for the Top 64 in the world ...and is not THAT far off --- and he is barely inside at 63rd. Why would you NOT be in Puerto Rico, maybe even get that first win (he would possibly be THE TOP favorite if he was there) ...get some FedEx points, move up a few more to give you breathing room for the Match Play ---and even get inside the Top 50 for other main events? This, in MY opinion is a golden opportunity that DeLaet is wasting.... what are all of YOUR thoughts?

If a golfer is not eligible for Doral I don't see any more of a reason to play Peurto Rico than I would see reason to play any other event on tour that takes place when there is only one event going on. It might be a little easier because of a weakened field to get a high finish but it is hard to win any event on tour regardless of the field. I would probably choose almost any tournament over Peurto Rico to play expect maybe the Valero Texas Open ;-) I can see an argument either way.

Delaet is one of the few who SHOULD suffer...er PLAY the Valero Open. Until he has won and/ or under 50th...He needs to take advantage of such weeks. He is not at Doral this week...that SHOULD be eating away at him.

I looked at the leaderboard at the Puerto Rico Open and it is brutal. Even worse than I thought as far as the golfers in the tournament. There are some golfers in the field like Paul Stankowski who I used to like about 10-15 years ago. It is full of no namers and washed up guys or guys just hanging onto their careers. I think the web.com tour could probably outplay that field.
Some of the guys that made me laugh a little when I saw their names in the field
Billy Mayfair Shaun Micheel Michael Bradley Stephen Ames Steve Flesch Lee Janzen - wasn't he good like 20 years ago Ted Purdy Heath Slocum Mark Brooks - didn't he win a major once Chris DiMarco - whatever happened to this guy Tim Herron - God I hate that guy Duffy Waldorf - always a punk Jesper Parnevik - when was the last time he qualified for anything Jeff Maggert - another guy just hanging by a thread to his career Tim Petrovic Paul Stankowski - used to be one of my favorites on tour Charlie Wi - man did he become irrelevant in a hurry Skip Kendall - perfect definition of a journeyman Rocco Mediate - once actually challenged Tiger Woods in his prime

David Duval is another golfer entered into the field. I don't think I ever remember a golfer as dominant as Duval was for about a 3 year stretch but have the rest of his career be as poor as Duval's has been. It's a shame that he wasn't able to have a productive career longer than what he has had. He is now relegated to playing in lower level events.

Well...He currently has a nice job at Golf Channel as well. Yeah...it shows how easily it all can leave you quickly.
