So we have a shiny new schedule to talk about on the PGA Tour.
To recollection it looks like the Houston Open, The National in Washington D.C., Bridgestone Invitation at Firestone in Akron, OH were all eliminated. I would not have personally gotten rid of the Houston Open as I kind of like the course. Why have The Valero In San Antonio, The Byron Nelson in the Dallas Metro, The Colonial in the Dallas Metro and the Match Play in Austin TX. I am sorry but Texas should not have 4 events on tour on an annual basis and prior to losing Shell they had 5. They should have kept Houston and ONE of the Dallas events and that is it. Tradition is nice but there is not a need for the Byron Nelson and Colonial both. There is definitely no need for the Texas Open.
I also think they should not have the WGC event in the late winter in Mexico. I think the Mexico Championship is a good idea, just not as a WGC event. I think that event should either be in Florida or maybe California. I would also like to see one of the California events get the boot in favor of a Las Vegas event in February instead of having one in October. When the U.S. Open is at Pebble such as in 2019 I think they need to move the stupid Pro Am event to Lake Tahoe that way the celebrities can gush over each other in a place that is more made for it.
I don't mind that the WGC event changed to TPC Southwind in Memphis. That is a nice course. What I would have done is sacked the John Deere Classic in Silvis Ill. There is nothing about the Quad Cities or that course the screams PGA Tour annual event. This is what I would do for the 4 tourney stretch from the U.S. Open to the British. I would keep the new events in Detroit and Minneapolis but I would move the Travelers to a fall swing. I would add a tour even in Washington or Oregon and than also have one in Utah as well. What I would do in October is have the Travelers in Connecticut and follow it up with a fall event in either New Hampshire or Vermont or possibly Maine. A fall event in New England would be awesome. Make it on a tree laiden course where the natural beauty of the New England autumn colors would showcase the tour. It might be a bit chilly but they could live with it for a long weekend.
I really like having the Players in March as the weather is more suited for that event in early spring anyway. Our fantasy season will be better suited and get off to a faster start having tier 1 events once a month in March thru July. If you really want to have some fun have the Match Play event be the event in Utah. For the first three rounds use the Stableford scoring system where you get 5 points for an Eagle, 2 for a birdie (or whatever it is) etc. You just have your head to head matchup use that scoring system and whoever gets the most points wins. Have a few holes where you have some 320 yard par 4 risk reward holes where Eagles are possible.
One more Appalachian event would also be cool. My choice would either be in Kentucky or even more preferable on the wester side of Virginia someone in the mountains.
