There has been some recent discussion regarding the Wells Fargo Championship and whether or not it should be a tier 2 event. I think most of us agree that perhaps it should not be compared to other tier 2's. There has been a suggestion that we should not decide the tier an event should be until the field is announced. There is one major sticking point with this. I have the tourney's tiered as they are for a reason. I would like to keep the ratio of 5 tier one's, 10 tier two's and 20 tier three's if at all possible. The reason for this is that I don't want to decrease or increase the amount of total points be divied out each year. I also want to keep the values of the golfer that plays alot vs the golfer that doesn't but tends to play in bigger events. I want both to have good value and think the way we have it values both types equally.
I think everyone would agree with the following
The tier 1 events are the Majors on tour including the Players which many golfers consider the fifth major. The only event I could see breaking that bubble would possibly be the Season Ending Tour Championship. I would not vote for it to be included personally but I can understand the argument.
These tier 2 events I cannot really see changing.
WGC - Mexico Championship
WGC - Match Play
WGC - Bridgestone Invitational
All 4 Fed Ex Cup Playoff events
That leaves 3 events that have at least some wiggle room
The Phoenix Open - this tourney is the only event prior to March that is a tier 2 event but one we added in place of Pebble a few years ago. This is a fun event and a fairly popular one but not one that is locked into tier 2 status.
The Wells Fargo Championship - this seems to be the tourney most likely to be bumped down in stature. There is really nothing special about it and the field this year is rather mediocre.
The Memorial - this is probably the least likely to be bumped down but I remember in past years where this event seemed like a bigger deal then it is now. It seems to have lost at least some of it's luster over the years.
I like the idea of having some leeway but I also like to know coming into the year which tier each event is to be scored. If that doesn't happen we may have an issue with not having enough tier 2 events or having too many tier 2 events. What we could consider is to keep three tourneys open for discussion at the beginning of each year and decide as a league which three events each year will be added to the tier 2 status.
What does everyone else think of this???
