Come on owners we are getting very lackadasical when it comes to keeping the communication going with these tourneys. Not much chatter going on. I like to hear what people think of golf and what people think of their teams good or bad.
I will throw out my top 10 power rankings. Getting 5 correct would be very good.
1) Jordan Spieth - evethough DJ is the Vegas favorite I will not consider anyone but Jordan a favorite here until someone proves they are better then him at Augusta consistently. DJ had his redemption at the U.S. Open last year after what happened on the 18th green the year before at Chambers Bay and I think Jordan does the same this year with the horrors of #12.
2) Dustin Johnson - he is playing the best of anyone but Augusta seems to be where the golf world can be thrown somewhat upside down or at least side ways for a weekend. DJ does need to learn to navigate a flight of stairs while chewing gum. I think this is all a ploy by Mr. Paulina Gretzky to prove to any possible nay says that he can not only win this major but also do it in a banged up type matter.
3) Phil Mickelson - I have a good feeling he could make a run at this thing deep into Sunday's final round. I think he is the same age as Nicklaus was when he had his improbable win in 1986. I think everyone would agree that Phil seems much more in the prime of his career then what Jack was at the time. At the end of his prime, but prime none the less.
4) Justin Rose - I think when it comes to majors he is always a safe bet to have a good tourney.
5) Rory McIlroy - he can be so hard to figure out and his game can go from off to on so quickly.
6) Tyrrell Hatton - he could be the better version of Willett but a little or even a lot less fluky. It won't quite be enough to get the green jacket like Danny boy did.
7) Daniel Berger - he has been coming on lately and Augusta comes at a good time for him. Maybe the slight reach of my power rankings.
8) Jason Day - I think he will have his personal life on his mind just enough to cost him 3 or 4 shots over the course of the 4 days.
9) Jon Rahm - It was reported that Rahm was feeling some fatigue after the match play and into last week. The negative is that he does not have a Masters tourney under his belt going in. He has much the same auro around him then Jordan did the year he won it. It would not surprise me if he won but I think he is still a year away here. He has everything in his game to be great on this course some day. He is like a poor man's Spieth that hits it much further than Jordan does.
10) Angel Cabrera - This guy could be 75 years old and still figure out a way to be competitive here. This is my old fogey pick of the week. There always seems to be one in contention here every year.
Guys that were left out
Matsuyama - for some reason this guy is not taking his game to the next level recently and hasn't been playing "light it up" golf lately. Not a good place to suddenly turn around a game unless a past winner at this venue.
Fowler - I just don't know that he has the mentality to get through the mental gymnastics that are required to get through 72 holes here. He is a good player that lacks great major results. He will win a major some day but I think that day is 3 or 4 years away yet.
Bubba Watson - nearly always plays well at Augusta but I just cannot trust his game for 72 holes enough for me to put him in the top 10.
Patrick Reed - For some reason he doesn't show up at more majors than he does show up for.
Adam Scott - he may have been my #11 if I went past the top 10.
Zach Johnson - I was considering putting him in my top 10 as he is usually good for one very good major every 2 or 3 years. Problem is he usually gives no indication when that time is nearly upon him and which major that time might occur.
Fred Couples - some think he can contend but you can count me amongst those that don't think he can anymore. He is closer to 60 than 50 and that is not a good number that compares with 72 holes. He will not make the cut.
Danny Willett - Some may disagree but I think he is a fluke that won't win another major in his career.
Charl Schwartzel - he could be one I regret leaving out of the top 10 but on the other hand his promising career never really took off to full flight after his Masters win. He is just kind of cruising along playing solid golf often but great golf never.
Justin Thomas - was hot as a fire cracker in Hawaii but he might kind of be the forgotten about golfer all of the sudden. Will Thomas have a hot and cold career kind of like a rich man's Billy Horschel.
Henrik Stenson - I under rate him in just about any analysis I ever do on him and BINGO I am doing it again.
Tiger Woods - is it time that he take the honorary first tee shots along side Player and Nicklaus. He isn't that far off from this distinction other than his relatively young age talking in this manner. I still think Karma is turning it's ugly head from his dumpster fire personal life. The gods of golf say "Tiger you can sleep with 50 women but in return I am giving you a faulty back the rest of your career"
