Hey, I enjoy hearing all opinions, and discussions about golf--players, courses, etc. Not much talk lately... a bit from Eric and myself...maybe Rich. I think no Doral is wrong... fifty-plus years, and a great course..really cannot believe they didn't work on a solution for keeping Doral in the fold. Now ...being a WGC event, I am all for it being in another country ---the W IS for WORLD, afterall. I also must stress again, that if you guys have the Golf Channel, watch some of the European Tour events ---there are some wonderful courses all around the world --I love seeing a tournament in India, or France, or Mauritius, etc.
This brings us to this week's tourney. While upset, that there is no Doral this year (or who knows how long?) -- as well as wondering how Mexico ---especially Mexico City, as one of Earth's biggest eyesores, could pull off this event --- I am also at least intrigued at how the course will play, and look. It is a short course --- but two of the three Par-5's are over 625 yards. You start off with the first hole being a driveable Par-4, and many of the Par-4's being shorter. Yes, combined with the altitude, this could/would seem like a dream for bombers....but to me, I think this sounds hopeful, for strong iron-play. Guys, like Stenson, Scott, etc. I think could do very well, here. ALso, one thing that looks initially promising to me, are the woods, and tree-lined fairways....look at some of the photos of the guys practicing at PGAtour.com ---raised my eyebrow, at least.
To me ---to be a WGC event ---has to be somewhat challenging. I don't expect it to be like a U.S.Open, or other majors, Player's, etc. level necessarily... however, I have heard some predictions of the winner being around 25-under. If THAT is the case, then it should be moved elsewhere. You have to EARN your way into this tourney, and only 75 guys or so, will have done that. Give them a solid challenge at least --yeah, these are the best, and so you want birdies, maybe a few eagles ... but you don't want them all making your course seem like Putt-Putt, either. That is one main thing I am watching for, and analyzing.
So...what are some of the main things you are looking for this week, and/or interested in with this course/event? Share, share! Let us get a good discussion rolling!
