Would love to hear some of your thoughts on the draft. I know a few of you analyze this stuff much more than I do and I always like reading the thoughts and theories behind it.
So, your thoughts of the draft?
Did it go as you thought?
Did you get the players you targeted?
I will say I was thrown off a bit with how high a few of these players went. I was curious to see with the new sub rule if golfers would go for a bit less to keep more cap? But,then after those first couple players I hear the dreaded sound of vomit. LOL We had my 7 yo's bday party at chuck e cheese Saturday. I made the comment to my wife how that place was a big petri dish of germs. Sure enough. My youngest puking all over the floor right outside my office. So, I missed some of it trying to help the wife grab a bucket and towels...........AND keeping the dog from eating it. Oy. Anyway, a few of the people that I really wanted at the top were gone so I had to regroup a little. I decided to just sit tight, which was extremely difficult, and try to target those mid-range guys and hopefully be able to outbid for them. The funny thing though is my cap mgmt went to crap. My thoughts were to get a bunch more golfers and use the new sub rule to that advantage. But, I ended up spending more than I wanted anyway. whoopsie.
I did manage to completely overhaul my roster though. I was trying to stay away from those comfort zone golfers. I ended up with a couple of them I've had in the past. Another one or two I missed in the snake round by one or two people. Thinking I was going to get them and they were picked just before my turn. The one negative with being in the middle of the order.

The auction surprised me a bit. I thought auction dollars would rise with the cap expanded, but i didn't expect it to grow that much. Seeing Eric spend that money on Spieth was a surprise just because it was a big change from his normal style. It set the bar high for the other tier 1 players. At the end of the day I personally spent exactly what I had targeted. I know it is a lot, but I tend to sub less then many. Hopefully that doesn't backfire, but I could see it backfire for sure.
Originally I had plans to try and get Rory for anything under 115. His bidding caught me a bit off guard so I regrouped to get Rose to partner with Rickie. No doubt I overpaid for Justin Thomas, but I am gambling he can take the next step to stardom this year. Thanks Champ for pushing his cost up so darn much. At the end I was satisfied with what I ended up with. I think my roster is more balanced with PGA tour players then previous years.
I really think the rosters are more balanced in general this year. I just don't see a dominate roster like Ryan had last year. However one may still emerge.

I also was surprised at the high cost. Eric blew me out of the water and even though I thought about going higher, I decided where it was was high enough. and Eric said he would have gone to 140 (>?) I changed my strategy right then and went all in for Rory. My feeling was I needed one of the big 3 and was pretty sure that Josh would go to any price for Day. I put some limits to what I would spend and thanks to Josh's computer (or not paying attention? What was the * bid?) I was able to land Casey at great price which allowed me some flexibility. He is playing full time on tour this year. Hope he has a great one. I was glad we opened early and encourage that again. I wonder if we should speed up the countdown after the first 8-10 players as by that time, we are all in the loop. Either way, great time and looking forward to the season. Long Live the soon to be former "champ".

It has updated roster, salary cap numbers, transactions, weekly scoring results, and updated standings. He sent a copy yesterday. That is the best resource for reviewing rosters to work out trades.

Well...like Aaron...spent around what I figured...knew I would need to pay a bit more. Think more balance...impressed with Eric's new aggressive stance. Eric every year has perhaps had the best overall depth in having a full roster and choices for any tourney.....and thus he always has done decently. However, he just didn't have that one or two real studs who got him the points in the bigger events. Due to this, he often would slip a bit as the season went, and finish just outside the Top Three prize places. I knew this draft he was determined to get a stud or two...but he also wants guys who play, ( and also, he is the Anti-Josh...not generally big on the Euros/Aussies/Asians/ South Africans, etc.) SO... he didn't fuck around and grabbed Spieth -besides the obvious, Jordan is everything that Eric covets in a player...he is all that Eric has been hoping Keegan would be the past three years. It doesn't guarantee anything, but I respect his drive a lot. Pairing koepka with him again, bold new direction....he is not staying still waiting for change, he took the reins. Yes, he paid for it dollars-wise...but barring injuries or such...it likely will be worth it. Most of us got our main players. Bob DID steal Casey...thankfully I stole Grace later to compensate. I like Matt M's draft a lot...not just because it has many of the players I like... ButI think he has nice depth and balance by getting many at good prices. I think almost everyone made some very sound choices...don't think anyone had a weak or questionable draft. Should be a lot of fun.

I had a very simply strategy going into this season. Get rid of the garbage that has screwed me over too many times in past years. I tend to hit on the mid to lower level golfers but never succeed getting the top end players. I am getting frustrated having 2 full seasons out of the 5 or so that we have played getting zero victories from my team. Time to hopefully change that trend. If Spieth and Koepka can't change that trend than I am simply jinxed in that area.
I made the decision months ago that Spieth would be on my team and I would do whatever it took to get him this year unless he would have gone over 140.00 or maybe even 150.00. I had three golfers this year that I wanted on my team. Speith, Koepka and Ben Martin. I wasn't able to grab Martin because Mr. Champion wanted him a little bit more. We always seem to want the same golfers and based on his bidding on Koepka it appears he wanted him to.
I swore I would not have Keegan Bradley on my team. I believe I spent $78.00 on him last year and because he is a man crush of mine I just couldn't pass on $21.00 despite his recent struggles. Keegan's problem is not succeeding when he gets into contention, it's even getting into contention in the first place. Ironically I also ended up with Nick Watney. At least I didn't have to spend an auction spot on his this year.
Coming into the draft the prudent thing to do would have been to spend 200.00 dollars or less on the auction just because of the need to save money this year. I went over budget by about $35.00 or so but I had to show some big restraint when players went up that I would have really liked. I spend $236.00 which only ranked 6th so quite a few teams spent more. I knew if I ended up with my top 2 that I wanted that I would have to skimp on spots 3-7 but that is just the way things go sometimes.
My playes that I was happy to get.
Peter Malnati - mainly because he has promise and has played well so far this year Brendan Steele - he was good for me last year Morgan Hoffman - he could break out at any time Cameron Smith - sort of happy to but don't know how much he will play and if he is more hype than substance
My players with some question marks.
Charles Howell III - I honestly put him up hoping someone else would take him at $2 but I ended up with him as my #4 which is too high. He is stilla good golfer and has played well this year but I think I got him a little too high.
Nick Watney - True with him and Keegan I got them much cheaper than the year before so I don't have to have as high of expectations. Love Nick and it's sad that he can't get his game together more consistently. He may end up being a waste of a roster spot.
Si Woo Kim - alot of Asians with some promise but did I get the right one. I am not sure. He finished high this week and I obviously hope that continues.
Tyrone Van Aswegen - He just doesn't seem like the type of player I am used to having and I really question whether I should have drafted him but I like guys high in the Fed Ex Cup rankings and he was one of the higher available when I picked him.
Spencer Levin - I don't know why I keep having this guy on my roster but he still does have some promise and hasn't been golfing too bad this year so far.
These are guys in the auction that I would have liked to have at their price but just didn't have the cap to make it happen.
Daniel Berger for $15 - he is practically just as good as Justin Thomas with a much better value. Patrick Rodgers for $7 - I kept watching him being passed over and was hoping to get him cheap but Ryan beat me to the punch again. Russell Henley for $30 - he didn't go cheaply but he is one of those guys that could live up to a $40 value. Ryan Moore for $14 - I ususally get him for 30 or so but he went at a pretty good bargain. Justin Rose for $80 - I drafted Koepka for $1 more and Rose is much safer. Kevin Kisner for $33 - He is rock solid but he doesn't have a long history but could be argued to be a $50 player Adam Scott for $50 - Wow he was a $80 plus player in the past but the anchored putter dropped his value Hunter Mahan for $11 - I would have loved to have him for that price - he has kind of disappeared lately but what a bargain. Billy Horschel for $32 - I really like him and if he was consistent would be a $60-70 type player Bill Haas for $25 - Every single year this guy is a good value. Nice to have him as a #3 or #4 golfer on a roster. Webb Simpson for $15 - could be about what he is worth these days but Wow this guy used to be worth about $70.00 or so. Branden Grace for $25 - he is good and getting better.
Spieth for $130 seems like a high price but after Day and McIlroy went for over $120 I didn't feel bad for getting Jordan for $130 at all.

I have to say a bit of panic set in when I saw those players going for what they did. I was hoping to get Spieth, Day or Rory. Once I realized those were out I was going to make a run at Fowler but with the bidding getting as high as they all were I decided to completely change course and not pay more than about 50 for anyone, hoping to add a few more of the solid guys that still have a chance at a major or at the very least compete well in them. It was not easy to just sit and watch player after player after player get picked. LOL I knew I'd end up over paying a bit for a person or two, relatively speaking, but also figured once people had spent a bunch of money they weren't going to start running into the 40 to 50 dollar range very easily. Most I paid for anyone was 54 or 55 I think?
At this point I like the experience I have with past successes and figured I'd pair that with some hit or miss guys like Kim, Grillo etc. Now if a guys like WEstwood and McDowell can regain even a bit of their old form added onto guys like Garcia, Scott, Phil and Oosthuizen I might be able to score some points. I had some LEAN weeks last year. ouch

Well, last yr I got 4 guys ranked in the top 25 via PGA tour fantasy rankings. Watson, Walker, Haas and Woodland (woodland ranked 25). Also got Kokrak (who many thought was verge of breakout) and Harman and Jacobsen...and some other decent mid-level guys. Honestly thought I had a HELLUVA draft... and finished next to last. I usually like to trade, but resisted all trade offers last yr, unless I was the CLEAR winner of the trade. Turns out, shoulda traded every damn one of em, lol.
With the 3 subs rule this yr, I simply wanted to get solid performers, not so much at the top (as they are expensive, play less, and can kill you if they have an off year).
I still think this league can be won by the 'best' roster, top>middle> bottom, especially now with the 3 sub rule. Not just the best roster at the top.
A little part of me dies when I can't get Rory on my team. By far my fave player. Was my first pick in my first draft, yr one.... bet on him on 'the come', and boy was he fun to own. (despite that 10th tee at Augusta -- still blame that on Schwartzel). But I knew I wasn't going to get him, as I was not going to pay > 100, for anybody.
I really like Spieth as well... he's the best putter I've seen in a long time. Day is amazing talent, as well. But give me Rors every day and twice on Sunday. JMO. Past those 3, it's really a crapshoot. Bubba/DJ/Mats clearly next best 3. Johnson/Furyk/Kuch are money, but none could dominate. Stenson/Rose just don't play enough, for the price. IMO. And I'll never own Fowler, altho I like his new haircut. So after ya'll blew yer big money wads on those guys, I set my sights on 10/11 on my list... Reed and Walker. Got them for an average of 65, so good value, imo. To me, Walker has the most ability/moxie to have a year that could rival Spieth/Rory/Day/Watson. Still in his golf prime... and a phenomenal putter. And works with Butch Harmon. I had him last yr and he disappointed overall, but think he rebounds. Tough hombre. Altho a Ga boy, I actually don't like Reed that much... but he's pretty talented, and doesn't lack in confidence. So I was happy to get those two 'at my top'. Either or both could reward me, in spades. Not a Fowler fan, other than his Golf Boys videos.
Getting Walker and Reed allowed me to save money for the rest of my roster. And I really wanted to add Koepka, Streb, or JB Holmes to those two... but the bidding got way too high. Plus, I got kicked off the net in the Koepka bidding.
What I missed in that next tier of Koepka/streb/holmes... I was very happy in nailing (imo) the rest of my draft with Na, Horschel, Kaymer, Bowditch, Leishman, DeLaet, Harman, Perez, Kokrak, Swafford. I think with the 3 subs rule, that group of guys could make me very competitive.

If this was a snake draft and if you put a gun to my head with each pick this is probably how I would rank the players in the top 10. This is obviously a very hard list to make up and get right.
1) Spieth - He has a high floor and a tremendous ceiling and almost never has an off week. His points are practically money in the bank.
2) Day - Now that he has tasted major success he is the only one in my opinion that has become consistant enough to challenge Jordan.
3) Dustin Johnson - some may disagree with this ranking but he shows up for all tourney's now small or big. I can very easily see him win a major this year and they will relieve his 3 putt at Chambers Bay and how he was able to over come it this year. I can see that story and one I am sure Ryan would love to have come true.
4) Rory McIlroy - and I considered bumping him down some more. For some reason I just can't totally trust him eventhough he has shown past greatness. He doesn't seem to be consistant and doesn't play enough either. Even at his best now he has Spieth, Day and maybe a couple of others that may still out play him.
5) Bubba Watson - He will not wilt in big moments and is reliable when in contention at big events. I just worry about how much he plays. I used to dislike him but after hearing him I no longer have dislike for him. He is a good guy.
6) Brooks Koepka - I saw a ranking system that had him as high as #3 overall this year. The biggest factor with him is that he is not proven in big moments. He plays quite a bit which is a bonus. He doesn't necessarily show up for all tourney's but could end up alot like Jason Day if he ends up winning a major. In 2 years if he progresses could end up being an annual top 5 golfer. This ranking is based on some hype.
gap
7) Justin Rose - This spot is a tough one to fill but after considering it I think Rose is a pretty safe pick. He has won a major and is another one like Watson that is not going to choke in a tough situation. He can be trusted but his issue is the same with a few and that is a lack of playing time on the PGA Tour.
8) Rickie Fowler - He still has alot of upside and is actually becoming a bit safer. Not safe, just safer. He has performed well in big moments and broke through at the Players. He has what it takes to win a major in the next 3 years but suddenly has competition from other golfers that are a bit more accomplished.
9) Patrick Reed - If he could simply take the fist half of the year and repeat it in summer and fall he could really be tough. He definitely shows up for the common tourney and all that is holding him back is a little bit better plan in majors and to keep his stamina for a full season.
10) Hideki Matsuyama - Deserved or not there is not a player that is probably hyped up more than Mats in this league. His results probably don't live up to his lofty expectations and he needs to play more as well. I am not sure I could trust him on the back 9 of a major when guys like Spieth and Day are even with him on the leaderboard. He just needs more seasoning like Koepka. Could he be the first Asian that can be trusted week in and week out and year after year to be a top 5 or even top 10 golfer. That remains to be seen. I would pay probably 50 dollars are so for him but I would be at least 30 dollars short in what someone else would pay for him.
There could be some mistakes in here but this is my attempt at my personal top 10 rankings.

My snake draft for this league...
1) Jordan GAP (because this league is PGA tour centric) 2) Rory 3) Day 4) Fowler (Plays a lot and plays big in big events) 5) DJ GAP 6) Bubba 7) Rose 8) Matsuyama (only lower than Rose because Rose is more proven) 9) Stenson (Big in big events and produces in FedEx Cup) 10) Snedeker/Reed

To continue and somewhat back up Eric: Like many in this league, I am a Matsuyama fan...and as well as logic/knowledge, I have always valued getting players I naturally cheer for. I might know that Reed would be a sound addition for my roster, but I would hate having to cheer for him in a tourney...so you never will see Pouting Jowls on my team. Hideki....is wonderfully consistent...that string of top 25 results was very impressive. Impressiv as that was, there WAS a bit of frustration with him. When Hideki is ON...he plays almost at the level that Day, Spieth, Rory does. When he shoots a nine-under round...it is a thing of beauty, and you are not surprised. However too ofTen....his finishing say, 16th in a tourNey. sHOULD have been a Top 5....usually because he often would have that one round of even par afterwards....or rounds where he got off to another great start...say four under after eight holes....just to shoot over par on his back nine. Plus...too often, he would not take advantage of Par 5's...even getting bogeys...which for a player of his caliber, is inexcusable. He is right on that cusp of that top level...but he needs now to learn to truly finish, and only not win tourneys because another player ALSO killed it... NOT because he had a period of 20 holes in the middle where he seemed to put things on auto-pilot. So indeed...much of the bidding...and desire for the guy is based on him getting over that final hurdle, because if he does, he has all the tools. I do believe he has the most potential that any Asian player has ever had up to this point. He is young...just needs that last bit of maturity and mental focus to complete the transformation.
