This is the tourney where you don't want your players entered because after trying this course they will be worse off because of it and it might wreck their game for the rest of the year, but if they are lucky maybe only a month. How can this possibly be a tune up for the Masters? Yours truly and The Purple Rod of Truth would rather face a firing squad than submit their teams to this.......thing. An additional thing: The Shell Houston Open used to be the tourney that was the week before The Masters. Besides giving all players not yet in the Masters field one last shot to make it to Augusta with a win...it also gave said player, as well as all the other players still playing the event, who already HAD qualified for Augusta an additional bonus.
The way the course in Houston is set up, it is tailored very much after Augusta National. There are many similarities, and you will find many players who have faired well at Houston, also did at Augusta. In this, playing in Houson actually often was a very good prep for playing Augusta the following week.
Playing Valero preps you for....I do not know...playing golf in the Underworld, perhaps?
Now if you have yet to qualify...you need to be here...it is down to your last shot for this year to play Augusta. If you already have qualified...other than maybe a small few who maybe can just use a few more rounds just to work out some recent kinks or flaws in their game of recent...I really do not see why they are here, and why this field is so loaded...especially after a possible heavy week at the Match Play for those there.

There are way too many events in Texas and I know I bring this up every year. Valero absolutely needs to go. That course should not hold any pro events let alone a PGA event. The problem is that the PGA wants to end their season in August or the first week in September so the weather doesn't allow the nothern and mountain states the calender dates so they get pushed out. Not having a PGA event in Colorado is a travesty.
